The individual presentations for the most part were thoughtful and organized, and the quality of discussions provided a window into the real everyday issues facing people.

The research presentation was standing room only and gave me hope that artists are interested in the topic bridging personal time in the studio with more mainstream periodic, observational and ethnographic strains of research activities. The discussion on educational rubrics to evaluate student work was excellent. The most important session was the presentation on a two page definition of what is a foundation program. After 60 years of post-war foundation and 30 years of FATE, the organization is taking an important and overdue step of level-setting what goes into a foundation.

FATE should improve the experience by limiting the number of individual presentations in one sessions to three and leave about 45 minutes for discussion. Without discussion, it becomes a one-way experience. Also FATE should distribute a list of attendees and their contact information for post-conference follow-up.

FATE conference hosted by MIAD in Milwaukee

The 11th Biennial Conference hosted by the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design marked the 30th Anniversary of the FATE organization. Artists, educators, and scholars from around the country exchanged ideas in Milwaukee March 28-31, 2007.

The conference theme was Shift • Connect • Evolve
This conference centered on the ways to be relevant for the new generation of art/design students. The many conference opportunities were intended to help prepare foundations level educators for the shifts that are taking place because of the new student population, the increased use of technology, and the blurring boundaries between disciplines.

CAA and FATE offer several opportunities

Hey all,

There are serveral opportunities at CAA in NYC this year for FATE folk:

•Open Session

•Open Session for Graduate Students

•NAEA/FATE Business meeting

Please contact me asap about the Open Session and then contact me soon/before Dec 1 about the Open Session for Graduate Students and the NAEA/FATE Business meeting.

Scott Betz

betzs@wssu.edu

more later...

Cloud Gate

The Think Tank made their initial rendezvous at Anish Kapoor's "Cloud Gate" on the edge of Millennium Park. The brain child of Mary Stewart and Jim Elniski, the workshop focused on the topic of GTA training. Much lively discussion was generated by all, with time left over to visit Chicago's great museums and public spaces...and brew pubs. Adam Kallish created a great graphic that captures that inimitable Think Tank feeling.

Foundations in Art

Welcome to the "unofficial" blog for Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE)--the national organization for foundation art teaching.
